Homework Two

In this assignment you will create a single web page about anything you like. For example,

I suggest you begin by creating a folder with a name like ite170 on your computer if you have not already done so..

  1. Within the folder you created, create a folder named hw2.
  2. Create a web page with the standard tags. One way to do this is to use the starter.html file which contains these tags. The file should be savedt inside the folder hw2 (10 points) with a filename that relates to the topic of your webpage (10 points) and the filename should not contain spaces (10 points) and should have an extension of .htm or .html (10 points). Instructions on how to show extensions for various versions of Windows can be found in week 1 of the schedule page at www.billpegram.com
  3. Open the file in a text editor such at Notepad, Notepad++, etc. and do the following (you can test the page in the browser as you go along if you like)
    1. Modify the <title> tag so that it corresponds to the content of your page (10 points)
    2. Use a <h1> tag for the main heading of your page (10 points)
    3. Use at least one <p> tag (5 points) and have at least three sentences. (10 points)
    4. Create an absolute link to another website that relates to the topic of your page. Remember that links should never contain a reference to a drive, such as a:, c:, or a thumb drive. (30 points)
    5. Test your page in the browser and make sure everything is OK.
  4. Decide whether you want folders such as hw2, hw3, etc. at the top level of your website or whether you want these folders to be within some folder on your website. Most students do the former.
  5. Using CoreFTP or another FTP program, upload your hw2 folder to your student webspace. Instructions regarding FTP can be found in week 2 of the schedule page and at www.nvcc.edu/ithd/students/ftp.html including how to determine your lanid. In week 2 classes, you will have tried to connect to your student website using CoreFTP. If you were unsuccessful, you will have to contact the ITHelpDesk. The email address for these problems is Itss_accounts@nvcc.edu
  6. In your web browser, visit your student website. The URL will be of the form www.student.nvcc.edu/home/yourlanid.
  7. Go to your hw2 folder and click on the file and make sure everything looks OK and test your link to the other website.
  8. If you do not have an index.htm, index.html, default.html, etc file at the top level of your site, you will be able to see the folders in your website by visiting www.student.nvcc.edu/home/yourlanid . If this is the case, then submit www.student.nvcc.edu/home/yourlanid against the assignment in Blackboard. If you do have an index.htm, etc. file at the top level of your site, then submit the URL to your hw2 folder, e.g. www.student.nvcc.edu/home/yourlanid/hw2 - if your hw2 folder is inside another folder, you need to include the full path. I need to be able to view your hw2 folder in my browser.

In this course, I will not accept files emailed to me for several reasons:
