ITE 170 Hosting Alternatives - Spring 2018

  1. NVCC Student server - see instructions at www.nvcc.edu/home/jumiller/html_tutorial/ftp.html - the nvstu before the username is no longer required, but it still works - If you get a message "user cannot login in", you can call the ITHelpDesk at 703-426-4141 and ask them to reset your LanID password, or you can use option 2 below - these accounts are scheduled to go away at the end of 2018 - if you can connect without calling the ITHelpDesk, please use this option since we've encountered some messages " too many FTP requests from the same IP address" with option 2.
  2. www.williampegram.com
    hostname: www.williampegram.com
username: your last name (unless I've given you a different one)
password: your 7 digit student number

your webspace will be at www.williampegram.com/yourusername

  3. myDrive

    Core FTP
    Host:                     mydrive.nvcc.edu
    Username:         (blank)
    Password:           (blank)
    Port:                      21
    Connection:       FTP
    Deselect PASV

Users will be presented with a login prompt where they enter their MyNOVA username and password.

For your files to be visible to others, they must be uploaded into a folder named public at the top level of your web space. If the public folder doesn't exist, you can create it in the FTP program by clicking the folder icon (see red arrow below)
    Create Directory in CoreFTP

Once the directory is created, you want to FTP files inside of the directory -- so first open up the directory on the right, and then transfer files.

The URL for you and others to access your website will be http://mydrive.nvcc.edu/username/public where username is the username of the person whose website it is.
